An "escape from the ordinary" may be just the ticket. Americus, Georgia, located in Southwest Georgia, is less than a 3 hour drive from Atlanta, Montgomery and Tallahassee. On less than a tank of gas, you can explore this incredibly historic area. We have 2 National Historic Sites within a 15 minute drive. Andersonville National Historic Site comprised of Camp Sumter, the most infamous Civil War prison, Andersonville Military Cemetery and the National POW museum. Very powerful and thought-provoking. Jimmy Carter National Historic Site comprised of his boyhood home, the museum and welcome center, the train depot which served as his campaign headquarters, and the most recent addition - Billy Carter's Service Station has been restored as a museum. Entry to both National Historic Sites is FREE!
